Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson was the seventh President of the United States (1829-37). Sam Houston served with Jackson in Tennessee during the War of 1812. Houston served as a third lieutenant and was injured during the March 27, 1814 Battle of Horseshoe Bend. His courage during the combat caught the attention of Jackson and the two formed a life-long friendship with Jackson serving as Houston's mentor. Houston's second son, Andrew Jackson Houston (1854-1941) was named for his father's friend and mentor. Both he and his wife, Rachel Jackson, are honored on the SHSU campus. Jackson Hall was named in his honor of the former president.
