Bertha Kirkley
Bertha Kirkley was a 1889 graduate of SHNI. She began teaching history at SHNI in 1891 and later received her bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State Teachers College. After retiring from teaching in 1937, Kirkley became the curator of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum until 1941. Kirkley began the movement for the purchase of the Woodlawn home of Sam Houston and its perpetuation as a historic shrine. Kirkley Hall was named in her honor.
