Eleanor Paxton (Smith) Garrett graduated from SHSTC in 1954 (B.S., Elementary Education) and 1955 (M.A., Education).

She was named a Distinguished Alumni in 2008. In 2010, the Board of Regents approved renaming the 34-year old Teacher Education Center in honor of Eleanor and Charles Garrett in recognition of her lifelong support of elementary, secondary, and higher education and their noteworthy gift to the university's share the vision capital campaign.

In 2012 Lamar University in Beaumont announced the naming of the Charles and Eleanor Garrett Engineering Center in recognition of a major gift from the Garretts that will establish the Garrett Scholars for students, the Garrett Engineering Faculty Enhancement Fund, and the Charles and Eleanor Garrett Chair in Engineering.
