Oran M. Roberts
Oran Milo Roberts was 17th Governor of Texas (1879-1883). In April 1879, Roberts signed legislature to create Sam Houston Normal Institute in Huntsville. The Sam Houston Normal Institute yearbook, the Alcalde, first published in 1910, was named in honor of Roberts whose nickname was "The Old Alcalde", a Spanish term for a community official, such as mayor or judge. Mary Estill, in her book Vision Realized (1970), identifies Roberts as one of "Five Who Served Sam Houston Well"- a group of individuals that were instrumental in the formation and early years of Sam Houston Normal Institute.
