The Smith-Hutson Business Building is a four-story academic building located on the east-central side of campus. It is the flagship building of the College of Business Administration (COBA).

Business and "commercial courses" were originally offered as early as 1923, taught in the Science and Administration Building. The first Bachelor of Business degrees were awarded in 1935, with the Master of Business Administration degrees first offered in 1964. By 1966, the School of Business Administration and Applied Arts required a building of its own. This building was constructed as the Business and Economics Building, one of three buildings constructed in the late-1960s when Sam Houston State College expanded its eastern border across Avenue I.

In 2003 the Board of Regents approved plans for renovations and an addition to the building at an estimated cost of $8.3 million. Construction was completed two years later and dedicated in 2005.
