Jack S. Staggs was named a Professor Emeritus of Education in 2003 and is considered to be one of the 10 founders of counseling in the state of Texas.

Staggs earned degrees from State College of Arkansas (BA), George Peabody College for Teachers (MA), and the University of Houston (Ph.D). He began teaching at SHSTC in 1960 and served 13 years as director of the Department of Education. He retired in 1986 and taught part-time until 1993.

Staggs served on many university councils and committees, as president of the university chapter of the American Association of University Professors, and numerous other organizations, including Rotary International and First United Methodist Church.

Because of his contributions to the counseling program, Staggs was honored in 2004 as the namesake of the Dr. Jack S. Staggs Counseling Clinic, a training clinic for doctoral and master’s students, in the Counselor Education Center.
