Sam Houston first arrives in Texas, the city of Huntsville is founded, and the Republic of Texas is forged.
1840-49
Texas admitted to the Union, Walker County created, and Austin College receives its charter.
1850-59
The decade that the original Austin College Building and the Steamboat House are constructed.
1860-69
Huntsville loses out in the Yellow Fever epidemic, the Peabody Education Fund helps an impoverished south, and the Raven flies no more.
1870-79
Austin College moves to Sherman and Sam Houston Normal Institute opens.
1880-89
The first ten years of SHNI.
1890-99
Normal schools begin to appear elsewhere within the state and SHNI dedicates its Main Building.

SHNI celebrates a quarter century, a new library, and alumnus Harry F. Estill as president.
